Immigration

Buena Vista’s immigration ministry hearkens back to the church’s beginnings as an outreach ministry to immigrants from Japan who faced suspicion and hostility from other parts of the community. Seeking to continue extending hospitality to the sojourner, our current Immigration Committee advocates for justice for asylum seekers, refugees, and other immigrant populations through letter- and email-writing and participating in vigils and demonstrations, as well as by providing direct service and accompaniment in partnership with the Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity and other immigrant rights organizations.

Over the last few years the committee and the church have accompanied and housed a refugee family from Guatemala and provided quarantine and isolation space for asylum seekers released from detention during the COVID-19 pandemic.
